A Mac Mini should be able to meet most of your everyday computing needs unless your are more of a power user and need the extra balls to do graphics and video editing. Newer Mac Minis should be able to even do those tasks more than adequately for your purposes.
The Mac Mini sits nicely anywhere as it does not take up much room. The Mac Mini will replace your DVD player and you can run your Television provider through it using a device like the Elgato TV Hybrid. This means you can record your television feed onto your Mac Mini and watch it later. It also means you can do everything from the Mac Mini with the exception of watching BluRay.
